Plein Air Painting on Monhegan Island
Discover a love for plein air painting with me on Monhegan, the artist's island. The plein air tradition, popularized by the impressionists in France, is a wonderful way to embrace nature and enjoy your creative side out of doors. And Monhegan Island is the iconic place to experience Maine's rocky coast and capture it in paint.
The workshop is open to all mediums and will cover the fundamentals of painting outdoors from observation:
- understanding the four value planes in the landscape
- finding the large interlocking value shapes in your scene
- using thumbnails to find likely focal points and cropping to choose one
- the shortcut to success - a value map
- color mixing
- how to paint within Mother Nature's time constraints
- how to know when you're done
This workshop is ideal for those who have not painted outside previously, and will be conducted in a supportive and nurturing manner. You'll work on your own projects and leave with at least one small finished painting each day. Beginners and intermediate painters are welcome. Mediums include oil, acrylic, water color, and pastel. This workshop is limited to 5 students.
The workshop will be held June 10-14 on Monhegan Island, 10 miles off the coast of Maine. Monday June 10, and Friday June 14 are combined instruction and travel days. The workshop cost is $350, exclusive of hotel, food, and ferry.
